Tottenham Pursues Dougie Freedman for Sporting Director Role Amidst Worries Over Igor Tudors Future
Tottenham Looks to Hire Freedman as New Sporting Director
Spurs Targeting Freedman Amid Restructuring Efforts
Tottenham Hotspur is reportedly eyeing Dougie Freedman for the role of sporting director as the club continues its transformation process, which comes amid growing uncertainties surrounding Igor Tudor’s position as interim manager.
The North London club has been on the lookout for a successor to Fabio Paratici, who left his position last January after a tumultuous second term with the team.
Freedman, who notably served as sporting director at Crystal Palace for eight years, departed the club in 2025 and currently works with Saudi Arabian outfit Al-Diriyah.
During his tenure at Palace, Freedman played a crucial role in acquiring several key players, including Michael Olise, Eberechi Eze, Marc Guehi, Adam Wharton, and Dean Henderson.
To expedite their managerial search, Spurs are keen to finalize a new sporting director who can influence the decision on the club’s next full-time manager, while Tudor remains in charge until the end of the current season.
Paul Winstanley of Chelsea and Tiago Pinto from Bournemouth are also believed to be candidates under consideration for the role.
Concerns Mounting Over Tudor’s Leadership
A whirlwind of structural changes has unfolded at Spurs over the last year. Executive chairman Daniel Levy stepped down last September, which was followed by the arrival of Carlos Raphael Moersen in January as the director of football operations.
However, the quest for a new sporting director coincides with the team’s challenging position in the Premier League relegation zone. A recent loss to Crystal Palace has left Spurs just one point above the bottom three, with only nine matches remaining to salvage their season.
Tudor took over from Thomas Frank in February, chosen for his capability to revitalize struggling squads. Yet, having lost all three games since his appointment, doubts have emerged regarding his effectiveness in the role.
Club sources indicated that there are no immediate plans to replace Tudor during this season, with confirmation he will lead the pre-match press conference ahead of the upcoming Champions League match against Atletico Madrid, signaling the club’s intent to continue with him.
Even if Tudor manages to keep Tottenham safe from relegation, it seems unlikely he will be considered for the full-time managerial position moving forward.
Analyzing Freedman’s Significant Contribution at Palace
The interest shown by Spurs in Freedman is logical given his impressive record of scouting and recruiting untapped talent. His successful signings at Palace include Guehi, Wharton, Olise, and Eze, among others.
However, Freedman’s capabilities extend beyond just identifying players from lower leagues. Notable signings like Jean-Philippe Mateta, Daniel Munoz, Dean Henderson, Ismaila Sarr, Cheick Doucoure, and Maxence Lacroix were all acquired during his time at Crystal Palace.
A report by Transfer Room ranked Freedman third among sporting directors based on the net contribution to squad value, trailing only Txiki Begiristain of Manchester City and Timmo Hardung of Eintracht Frankfurt. His players were deemed to have added approximately €374 million to Crystal Palace’s squad value.
Additionally, Crystal Palace profited significantly from Freedman’s acquisitions, selling Olise to Bayern Munich for £60 million after signing him for just £8 million and Eze to Arsenal for £67.5 million after his purchase for £19.5 million.
Notably, Freedman’s contributions have also led to major sporting achievements, exemplified by last year’s FA Cup triumph for Palace, alongside his role in hiring manager Oliver Glasner.
Those who have collaborated closely with Freedman portray him as direct and straightforward, traits that could benefit Tottenham in their current turbulent phase.
Freedman’s ability to collaborate effectively with managers to recruit players that thrive within their tactical setups remains one of his standout qualities.
As it stands, Spurs intend to maintain a dual sporting director system, suggesting that if Freedman is chosen, he would likely collaborate with Johan Lange in the new setup.
