When Will Premier League Players Depart for Afcon?

Clubs must release players for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) by Monday, December 15. This allows athletes to assemble six days before the tournament kicks off on Sunday, December 21, with the championship concluding on Sunday, January 18, 2026.

Following discussions with the Confederation of African Football (CAF), FIFA has confirmed the specific date for player release. A statement from FIFA noted:

Member Associations involved in CAF Afcon 2025 are encouraged to engage in constructive dialogues with clubs that have players in continental tournaments during the release timeframe to create suitable resolutions.

FIFA also stated it would implement regulations in the event of conflicts, acting as a mediator between clubs and national teams. Consequently, most teams will have their last opportunity to select players during the weekend of December 13–14, just before they head out to Morocco.

However, a few club matches are scheduled on the date players are expected to join the national squads, leading to their likely absence from those games. In the Premier League, Manchester United is set to face Bournemouth on the last day players are available. Rangers will also play against Hibernian that day in the Scottish Premiership, as well as various matches in the Championship, La Liga, Serie A, and the top divisions of both Portugal and Turkey.

Manchester United anticipates key players to participate in Afcon, including winger Amad Diallo (Ivory Coast) and defender Noussair Mazraoui (Morocco). Meanwhile, Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo (Cameroon) and Bournemouth’s Amine Adli (Morocco) are also expected to join their respective national teams.

Previously, Manchester United raised concerns about earlier player departures, which put into question their availability for the match against Wolves on December 8. At that point, they were hoping to receive an extension until after the home game against Bournemouth on December 15.

We know when we need to release our players, but we seek to keep them for a bit longer,

stated United head coach Ruben Amorim.

It’s not entirely under our control. We will explore potential arrangements with the national federations.
