Tottenham manager Thomas Frank has explained the recent drop in playing time for Senegalese midfielder Pape Matar Sarr.
The 23-year-old started the season as a key figure in Tottenham’s midfield but has recently seen limited minutes.
Over the last four Premier League matches, Sarr has played just 33 minutes and came on as a substitute in the Champions League clash against AS Monaco.
When asked about the player’s reduced involvement, Frank dismissed any speculation of problems and said the decision was based purely on squad competition.
“There’s no problem with him,” Frank told reporters. “He probably started the first six games and was very good for us.
We just decided to take it easy on him for a bit.”
The Tottenham boss added that other players have been performing well, forcing him to make tough choices.
“It’s just competition,” Frank continued. “Those are my decisions, but overall, I’m very happy with Pape.
He impressed me the most early in the season, and he’s a very good player.”
Sarr’s absence from the starting lineup has surprised fans, given his strong early-season form and consistent performances for both club and country.
His energy, work rate, and ability to control the midfield helped Tottenham make a bright start to their campaign.
Despite his recent bench role, Frank’s comments suggest the midfielder remains an important part of his plans.
Sarr’s versatility and professionalism continue to make him a valuable option as Tottenham balance Premier League and Champions League fixtures.
With a demanding schedule ahead, the Senegal international could soon regain his starting spot as Frank rotates his squad to maintain freshness and competitiveness.
