Thierry Henry Critiques Barcelonas Vulnerable Defense: Winning the Champions League Is Impossible This Way

Thierry Henry on Barcelona's shaky defence: You can’t win the Champions League like this!

Barcelona’s Champions League Hopes Dwindle Without Defensive Improvements

Former Barcelona star Thierry Henry has expressed his concerns, stating that the club’s chances of clinching the Champions League title are slim if they do not rectify their persistent defensive issues.

A Flawed Defense Haunts Barcelona

Barcelona, known for their attacking prowess, are expected to enhance their forward play as Raphinha returns to full fitness in the coming weeks. Nonetheless, their defensive performance has been marked by inconsistency and fragility.

The Catalan powerhouse has allowed 13 goals in their 11 domestic matches, and their defensive lapses were glaringly evident during a dismal display that resulted in conceding three goals against Club Brugge in the Champions League on Wednesday.

On CBS Sports, Henry voiced his concerns about his former club’s ability to compete for the prestigious trophy if these defensive frailties persist.

The organization at the back is severely lacking. You cannot expect to win the Champions League under these circumstances, it’s extremely challenging,

he criticized.

It was evident in this game against Club Brugge, as well as in previous matches against Paris Saint-Germain, Benfica, and more recently, Inter. Though I proudly played for great clubs like Arsenal, Juventus, and had a successful stint at Barcelona, it pains me to say this. However, one must face the reality: the current defending is unacceptable. Relying on outscoring opponents with hopes of netting three or four goals is no longer viable in modern football.

Barcelona Sticks to Their Defensive Strategy

Following the draw in Belgium, Barcelona’s head coach, Hansi Flick, firmly stated that his team would not change its defensive strategy.

Last season, that first goal wouldn’t have happened. Our confidence in executing the offside trap isn’t what it once was. We have no plans to shift how we defend,

Flick asserted.

He went on to highlight issues in midfield, noting,

Our pressing was inadequate, making it difficult to keep up with their speedy attackers. We need to review this draw closely to identify areas for improvement.

This season in the Champions League, Barcelona has conceded seven goals in four matches, with no clean sheets recorded since their 3-0 victory over Getafe back in September, reinforcing Henry’s criticisms.
