Szczesny Shares How Lewandowski Teased Him About Weight Gain: Footballers Must Stay Fit
Szczesny Reflects on Barcelona Move Following Juventus Contract Exit
Career Transition
Wojciech Szczesny recently shared insights into his career shift to Barcelona, which came after an early termination of his contract with Juventus last season. Initially announcing his retirement, Szczesny was drawn to La Liga primarily due to injury concerns and is now enjoying his time in the Spanish league.
Lighthearted Interaction with Lewandowski
During an interview with GQ Poland, Szczesny discussed his experience with Barcelona and recounted a humorous interaction with his national teammate, Robert Lewandowski. The striker jokingly commented on Szczesny’s physique, which the goalkeeper admits hasn’t always been the best.
“Athletes are expected to maintain their weight as it’s often tied to financial agreements. I enjoy my food, and while I keep my weight in check, I did exceed Barcelona’s body fat standards. In the national team locker room, Robert once teased me: ‘How has Szczesny managed such a successful career with that physique?’”
Szczesny acknowledged that hard training has never been his forte, yet he has consistently performed at a high level throughout his 18-year football journey.
“I may not have reached the top tier, but I’ve consistently ranked among the best. While I could have varied between outstanding and mediocre performances, I’ve steadied myself at a commendable level.”
Financial Realities at Barcelona
Discussing his financial situation following the move to Barcelona, Szczesny revealed the constraints the club faces.
“I effectively played my first season without any salary. The compensation I received from Barcelona was merely enough to cover the repayment I owed to Juventus for ending my contract prematurely.”
