Szczesny and Wenger Engage in Candid Conversation on Arsenal Departure: You Were Mistaken
Szczesny Reflects on Emotional Exit from Arsenal
The goalkeeper for Barcelona, Wojciech Szczesny, has expressed his deep sorrow over leaving Arsenal, describing it as a moment that “shattered” him.
A Heartfelt Reflection
In a recent documentary discussing his journey in football, Szczesny shared his feelings about his departure.
During a conversation with former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, he stated,
It was the only time in my career that truly broke my heart. I remember going home and just crying.
The Push Towards Juventus
Szczesny recounted that his move to Juventus was influenced by Wenger, who suggested it was the best option at that time. He mentioned,
You made it clear to me that it was the best decision and that I had to leave Arsenal.
Looking Back on Key Decisions
The goalkeeper probed Wenger on whether the decision to transfer him had been made earlier, specifically referencing an incident two years prior at Southampton when he was caught smoking. Szczesny stated,
I believe you had already decided two years before. From that point on, whatever I did was irrelevant.
Wenger admitted to having predetermined his departure due to concerns that Szczesny had become too comfortable at Arsenal.
Agreement on Comfort Zones
Szczesny concurred with Wenger’s assessment, saying,
I do believe I felt too secure during that period.
He did, however, express regret over an opportunity to return to the club after spending two years with Roma, suggesting,
You made a mistake not allowing me to come back.
In a later segment of the documentary, Wenger also acknowledged that not bringing Szczesny back was a blunder.
