Senegal Midfielder Habib Diarra Major Doubt For Next Month’s World Cup Qualifiers

Senegal’s Habib Diarra Faces Injury Uncertainty Ahead of October World Cup Qualifiers

Sunderland midfielder Habib Diarra was absent from his side’s Premier League clash against Aston Villa on Sunday in match week 5, raising questions about his availability for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

The Senegalese international missed the fixture at the Stadium of Light, with the club later confirming he is dealing with a muscle injury.

Head coach Régis Le Bris admitted the situation remains unclear.

“We don’t know yet,” he said when asked about the extent of Diarra’s problem. “The diagnosis is underway, but it will probably take a few weeks. He is suffering from a muscle injury.”

Diarra’s setback comes at a critical moment for both club and country.

Sunderland, looking to build on their momentum in the top flight, must now adjust without one of their key midfield figures.

For Senegal, the news is of particular concern.

National team coach Pape Thiaw is monitoring the situation closely as the Lions of Teranga prepare for two pivotal 2026 World Cup qualifiers in October.

Senegal, who currently top Group B, will face South Sudan on 10 October before meeting Mauritania four days later.

With qualification on the line, Thiaw will be hoping Diarra can recover in time, though early indications suggest he could be sidelined for several weeks.

The midfielder’s availability, or lack thereof, could have a major influence on Senegal’s push for a place at the next 2026 World Cup.
