Strategies for the Premier League to Attain a Fifth Champions League Berth in 2026/27
Premier League Poised for Fifth Champions League Spot
The Premier League is on track to secure an additional Champions League berth for the upcoming season, contingent on this week’s European matches proving favorable.
Pathway to Extra Spot for English Clubs
UEFA grants one European Performance Spot (EPS) each season to the two nations whose teams perform the best in that year’s European tournaments. This allocation is in addition to regular spots based on the established access list. For England, this means that alongside the existing four slots, an EPS would elevate the total to five.
Current Coefficient Rankings
As of the 2025-26 season, England holds the top position in the country coefficient rankings, surpassing Spain, which occupies second place, and Germany, in third.

Understanding the League Table Calculation
Points in the European competitions are awarded based on match outcomes: two points for a win and one for a draw, applicable across the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League. Additional points are given for advancement through tournament rounds, alongside bonus points based on the clubs’ league positions, favoring Champions League entrants.
The points accumulated are divided by the total number of teams from each nation participating in European competitions at the start of the season; for England, this figure is nine.
Current Status of English Clubs in Europe
As it stands, none of England’s six Champions League representatives secured wins in their respective first-leg matches of the round of 16. Only Arsenal and Liverpool are in relatively favorable positions for advancing to the quarterfinals, having recorded a draw and a narrow loss, respectively.
In the Europa League, Nottingham Forest is trailing against Denmark’s Midtjylland after their first leg, while Aston Villa is in a better situation after winning 1-0 against Lille. Crystal Palace’s chances in the Conference League remain uncertain following a goalless draw against AEK Larnaca.
Germany, currently ranked third, finds itself significantly behind England by 33 points. Out of its original seven clubs, five are still competing, with Bayern Munich having a strong likelihood of reaching the Champions League quarterfinals following a decisive victory over Atalanta. However, the other four clubs are either trailing or are without a lead going into their second legs, including Europa League teams Stuttgart and Freiburg.
