Mainz 05 Pursue Stefan Posch’s Return
Mainzer Allgemeine Zeitung has revealed that Mainz 05 is one of two Bundesliga clubs interested in re-signing Austrian defender Stefan Posch. The 28-year-old, who has represented Austria 49 times, was on the verge of joining the newly promoted Bundesliga side Hamburg during the summer transfer window, but the deal fell through due to complications on the management side.
Köln Also Eyeing Posch
Renowned football journalist Fabrizio Romano has now suggested that 1. FC Köln is also considering a move for Posch. It is indicated that the club has initiated preliminary discussions with both the player and Bologna, his current Serie A club. Following a series of injuries, Köln is in urgent need of reinforcement in their defense, leading coach Lukas Kwasniok to depend on players he had previously considered letting go.
Will Stefan Posch Join Köln or Mainz?
While acquiring Posch makes strategic sense, it is important to note that his salary and Bologna’s transfer fee demands halted Hamburg’s attempts to finalize the signing earlier this summer. Mainz’s financial limitations make it more plausible for them to seek alternatives, such as Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Marvin Friedrich, at a lower price.
In contrast, Köln has more financial flexibility due to the cost savings formed from their two-year transfer ban. However, this does not guarantee that they can afford the €5.5 million price tag for the defender. Additionally, before any sale can proceed, Bologna must first end Posch’s loan agreement with Como 1907.
