Spurs Fans Express Rising Frustration Over Roberto de Zerbis Appointment

Tottenham Fan Group Opposes De Zerbi’s Appointment as Manager

Growing Unease Over De Zerbi’s Selection

There is increasing dissatisfaction among Tottenham Hotspur supporters regarding the recent appointment of Roberto de Zerbi as head coach, primarily due to his contentious endorsement of Mason Greenwood. The Tottenham Hotspur Supporters’ Trust convened an urgent board meeting on Monday and subsequently reached out to the club expressing their inability to back the new manager.

Following a five-year deal with the former Brighton and Marseille coach as a replacement for Igor Tudor, reactions from the fans have been vocal and critical. The Supporters’ Trust indicated that they had received numerous emails from fans registering their grievances.

Ali Speechly, co-founder of Women of the Lane, has also declared her group’s opposition to De Zerbi’s hiring, stating she will cease attending matches as a form of protest.

De Zerbi has remarked that Greenwood has “paid in a strong way” following his departure from Manchester United, which occurred after the withdrawal of serious charges, including attempted rape and assault.

With De Zerbi now in charge, he faces a significant challenge in winning over the fan base, as the team fights to secure its position in the Premier League.

Why De Zerbi’s Comments Sparked Controversy

Mason Greenwood, once a standout talent at Manchester United, was arrested at 20 years old in early 2022, with all allegations against him being dropped in February 2023. Greenwood transitioned to a loan at Getafe before signing with Marseille in July 2024 for a reported fee of £26.6 million—a move that occurred just 19 days after De Zerbi’s appointment.

In Marseille, the controversial signing was criticized by local leaders, including Mayor Benoit Payan, who characterized it as “unacceptable,” expressing a desire for the club to avoid shame.

Despite the backlash, Greenwood excelled, tallying 47 goals in 74 matches and sharing the title of Ligue 1’s top scorer with Ousmane Dembélé last season.

Amid this backdrop, De Zerbi’s comments made in November have fueled anger among Spurs supporters. When asked about Greenwood’s off-field situation, he stated he doesn’t wish to intrude into anyone’s private life, emphasizing that Greenwood “seems a good lad” who has suffered enough.

Critics argue that De Zerbi appears to downplay the severity of the allegations against Greenwood, which many fans perceive as an affront.

“I Don’t Want Him Anywhere Near My Football Club”

Historically, Tottenham has encountered substantial resistance concerning managerial appointments. In 2021, after Jose Mourinho’s exit, there was significant backlash against the potential hiring of Gennaro Gattuso due to his polarizing views on various social issues. The fan uproar led to the club disavowing any interest in Gattuso as a candidate.

Parallel discussions are now occurring around De Zerbi’s appointment. Trust secretary Tristan Foot explained that the board has heard from many supporters and has communicated these concerns to the club.

In a concerning report to BBC Sport, Foot recounted that after their recent meeting, they contacted the club’s executive team to express their feedback and to urge a reconsideration of the club’s foundational values.

While club insiders say that De Zerbi’s comments about Greenwood influenced the hiring process, fan groups such as Women of the Lane, Proud Lilywhites, and SpursREACH have recently elevated their concerns on social media.

Speechly, who helped establish Women of the Lane, believes the appointment poses serious questions regarding the integrity of the club. She stated that the fact De Zerbi signed Greenwood, coupled with his public backing of the player, is something she finds unforgivable.

Emphasizing the need for safety and respect, Speechly criticized the implications of De Zerbi’s comments and his hiring. She declared that this development has fundamentally altered her relationship with the club, leading her to reconsider attending matches if De Zerbi remains.

The Supporters’ Trust has voiced its discontent over De Zerbi’s previous remarks, describing them as “unnecessary, ill-judged, and deeply offensive to a significant number of supporters.” They highlighted concerns that the club’s decisions jeopardize its core values at a crucial time when fan support is paramount for the team.

The Trust’s statement stressed that the commitment to equality, respect, and integrity is essential and that a different managerial choice should have been made to better align with the club’s ethos.

For further comments, Tottenham Hotspur has been invited to provide a response to the unfolding situation.
