South Africa U17 men’s national team has vowed to fly Africa’s flag high at the FIFA U17 World Cup in Qatar, which runs from November 3 to 27, 2025.
Coach Vela Khumalo’s young side jetted out of Johannesburg on Thursday, determined not to be mere participants but serious contenders on the global stage.
Before their departure, the South African Football Association (SAFA) hosted a colorful farewell breakfast attended by Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, SAFA President Dr. Danny Jordaan, CEO Lydia Monyepao, and other football dignitaries.
Premier Lesufi handed the team the national flag, urging them to play with pride and unity.
“On behalf of the South African government, we are wishing you well, so go there and make us proud. I have no doubt that you will make us proud,” he said.
Dr. Jordaan also reminded the boys of the great opportunity before them, saying:
“You have a big responsibility but also a very big opportunity. We want you to go and enjoy yourselves, focus, be disciplined and seek glory for the country, for yourselves, for the teams you come from and for SAFA as a national Association.”
The Amajimbos’ captain, Kamohelo Mareletse, expressed confidence that the team is ready to make an impression, starting with their opening match against Bolivia.
Coach Vela Khumalo summed up the team’s ambition: “The whole team thanks you for the support and we hope and pray that we will represent the country very well in Qatar.”
