South Africa Out of U20 World Cup After Colombia Defeat

South Africa’s U20 side exited the FIFA U20 World Cup after a 3-1 defeat to Colombia in Talca on Wednesday.

Colombia struck first at the Estadio Fiscal de Talca in the seventh minute. Óscar Perea delivered a perfect cross to Joel Canchimbo who beat Thato Sibiya at the near post and finished past Fletcher Smythe-Lowe.

Amajita responded with spirit after halftime. The referee awarded a penalty in the first minute of the second half following a foul inside the box.

Mfundo Vilakazi stepped up but saw his initial attempt saved. The referee ordered a retake after goalkeeper Jordan García moved early. Vilakazi converted the second attempt confidently, sending García the wrong way.

Colombia regained control in the 63rd minute. Néiser Villarreal met Perea’s cross from close range and smashed the ball into the roof of the net.

South Africa fought hard to equalize but struggled to break through Colombia’s compact defense. Their final passes lacked accuracy, and the attacking rhythm faded late in the match.

Colombia sealed the game in stoppage time. Jhon Rentería provided a precise assist, and Villarreal finished calmly for his second goal of the night.

The defeat ended South Africa’s campaign in the round of 16. Amajita showed flashes of promise but lacked consistency against a well-organized Colombian side.

Head coach and players expressed disappointment after the match, knowing their performance did not reflect their potential. The team now shifts focus toward rebuilding for future tournaments.

Colombia advanced to the quarterfinals, while South Africa left the competition with lessons learned and valuable international experience gained.
