Ole Gunnar Solskjaer Discusses Jadon Sancho’s Struggles at Manchester United

Former manager of Manchester United, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, has opened up about the reasons behind Jadon Sancho’s disappointing tenure at the club.

Sancho’s Arrival and Challenges

Solskjaer advocated for Sancho’s transfer from Borussia Dortmund in 2021, creating a buzz among fans who believed they had secured a top-tier player capable of elevating the team’s performance.

However, the £73 million signing did not live up to expectations, particularly after Solskjaer’s departure from the club in November of the same year, following a string of poor results, losing seven of his last thirteen matches.

Underperformance Explained

In over 80 appearances, the England international managed to find the net only 12 times. Solskjaer said part of Sancho’s decline was connected to the timing of his own dismissal.

Our aim was to make progress, not to shift away from what we had but to incorporate something new,

he said.

In the attacking phase, we needed players capable of dismantling defenses, and Jadon, with his finesse, combination play, and precise passing in the box, offered that.

He added,

Unfortunately, he faced some challenges. After his transfer, he went on a holiday and ended up suffering from an ear infection, which required hospitalization. This delayed his ability to train with our squad for the first ten days. Consequently, I didn’t get the opportunity to work with him effectively, as by the time he started regaining his form, I was already leaving the club.

Current Status of Sancho

Now on loan at Aston Villa as he enters the final year of his contract with Manchester United, Sancho finds himself with uncertain prospects at Old Trafford. Unless he makes a significant impact at Villa — who hold an option to buy him next summer — he may depart the club on a free transfer.

Despite this new chapter, Sancho has only made four appearances for Aston Villa and has yet to feature in a starting lineup for a Premier League match under coach Unai Emery.
