Slot Disappointed by Past Man City Loss; Suggests Liverpool Comeback; Embraces Jacquet Agreement
Liverpool’s Slot Stresses Need for Victory Against Manchester City
Pressing for Points as Season Nears Conclusion
Liverpool’s head coach, Arne Slot, acknowledges the team’s urgent need for a victory this Sunday against Manchester City. With a top-four finish on the line, he admits that securing points is now critical as the season approaches its final stages.
Joining forces with Manchester City, who arrive at Anfield fresh off their Carabao Cup semifinal triumph over Newcastle, Slot reflected on prior encounters. “I remember our last match there where we performed well for a significant part of the first half. This game will be another indicator of where we stand in our team’s development,” he stated.
Acknowledging the Challenge Ahead
Slot continued, “We understand how crucial a win is. As we approach the end of the season, results carry more weight, and we’re facing a formidable squad that recently overcame Newcastle even without their main players. That demonstrates the strength of Manchester City, one that they consistently maintain.”
In their previous meeting, Manchester City handed Liverpool a 3-0 loss at the Etihad in November, a result that remains fresh in Slot’s memory.
Looking for Redemption?
Slot expressed confidence, mentioning, “Both teams possess talented players, and we will see if we can harness our home advantage with the support of our fans. Aside from our opening half against City and Palace, we’ve shown the ability to compete against any opponent. Although consistency has eluded us, we have proven our competitiveness.”
He added, “City benefitted from a VAR decision that led to a disallowed goal and a penalty in that match, alongside conceding from a set piece. We aim to portray a stronger performance this time around.”
For Liverpool, a recent 4-1 victory over Newcastle has provided momentum, positioning them sixth, eight points behind second-placed Manchester City.
Slot remarked, “I believe we have played better than our last outing, particularly in the final hour. The first thirty minutes lacked the tempo we wanted, but we found our rhythm that led to a strong finish. Our performance wasn’t the best this season; however, we managed to perform well in both the offensive and defensive areas against Newcastle, which is now being recognized.”
Transfer Market Updates
On the topic of recent movements in the transfer market, Slot noted that, despite not adding any senior players, Liverpool secured young defender Jeremy Jacquet, who will be loaned back to Rennes for the remainder of the season.
“We are thrilled with this signing as he shows immense potential, despite his youth,” Slot explained. “Our club’s strategy involves targeting young, gifted players at the beginning of their careers, ensuring both immediate impact and future growth.”
In addition to Jacquet, Liverpool acquired Ifeanyi Ndukwe from Austria Wien and Mor Talla Ndiaye from Senegal’s Amitie FC.
Slot elaborated, “We maintain a long-term vision; we are not in a rush. While we recognize that Virgil van Dijk may not be around for the long haul, he still brings tremendous value in his remaining time with us. We are planning for life beyond him in every position.”
No Departure for Jones
Slot also addressed Inter Milan’s recent interest in midfielder Curtis Jones, who they sought to sign on a loan-to-buy basis. Liverpool rejected the approach.
He commented, “Jones has been utilized quite a bit; it’s just unfortunate that our midfield has been the only area without injuries. We need depth in those positions, and letting players go would only reduce our options.”
Slot responded firmly when questioned about Jones’ contract situation: “It’s intriguing how outside parties discuss contracts. When we have any updates, we’ll share them. We know he has 18 months remaining, and that’s all I can confirm.”
Wirtz Begins to Shine
Before concluding, Slot expressed satisfaction regarding the progression of Florian Wirtz, who was acquired for £125 million and is starting to showcase his potential.
As they prepare for the upcoming match against City, Slot remarked, “Credit goes to the player for his efforts both on the field and in training. If a player struggles physically, it’s important to keep them involved to foster improvement, and he exemplifies that principle.”
He emphasized, “Wirtz has always been exceptional on the ball, but his growth off the ball has made him ready for the Premier League. Success in this league requires effectiveness in both aspects of the game.”
