Bundesliga Winter Transfer Window Needs
As the winter transfer window approaches, clubs across the Bundesliga have one more opportunity this season to address any shortcomings in their rosters. We examined the situations of all 18 clubs to identify areas in dire need of upgrades. Attention is required, sports directors!
1. FSV Mainz 05
Mainz is facing significant issues with its squad composition, revealing a pressing need for players in nearly every position, intensified by their international commitments. A forward is particularly essential, as both Weiper and Hollerbach have yet to score in the Bundesliga this season, which is a concerning statistic.
1. FC Heidenheim
Heidenheim is looking to bolster its defense, specifically in the full-back positions. Recently, both Elias Baum (from Frankfurt) and Leonidas Stergiou (from Stuttgart) have been considered as potential loan acquisitions, with Baum being the more promising option.
FC St. Pauli
There is speculation regarding the return of Morgan Guilavogui from Lens to St. Pauli, alongside central defender Tomoya Ando’s signing. Both players would be valuable additions as the club battles relegation.
FC Augsburg
Augsburg desperately needs support in central attacking positions, with Samuel Essende and Philipp Tietz only managing one goal each so far. Tietz appears keen to exit the club, and the previously mooted return of Mergim Berisha seems unlikely according to recent reports.
VfL Wolfsburg
Wolfsburg is generally well-structured but could use added pace in midfield, as players like Arnold, Eriksen, and Majer are not well-known for their speed.
Hamburger SV
Similar to many Bundesliga teams, HSV is struggling with striker issues. Current forwards are either frequently injured (Glatzel, Poulsen) or out of form (Königsdörffer). Acquiring a strong target man could be crucial for their survival in the league.
Borussia Mönchengladbach
It’s well-acknowledged that Gladbach has considerable defensive weaknesses, a concern openly expressed by new sporting director Rouven Schröder. Central defense and the left flank are particularly vulnerable and should be addressed this winter.
1. FC Köln
Köln has been grappling with defensive setbacks following significant injuries to Kilian and Hübers. They’ve considered the re-signing of former player Bournauw, which seems a more viable option than pursuing Brackelmann from Paderborn.
SV Werder Bremen
Bremen’s attack remains an area of concern, with young forwards Topp and Njinmah underperforming, compounded by Boniface’s injuries. A fresh striker is essential to alleviate the pressure on coach Horst Steffen.
SC Freiburg
Freiburg has also dealt with defensive issues due to injuries to Lienhart and Rosenfelder, forcing veteran Anthony Jung into a central role, where he has made critical mistakes. Strengthening their defense is necessary if they aim for international competition.
Union Berlin
With central defender Danilo Doekhi leaving in the summer, and the potential departure of Diego Leite this winter, Union must secure a new defender to fill this upcoming gap.
Eintracht Frankfurt
Frankfurt’s squad currently exhibits multiple shortcomings, especially in defensive midfield and attack, where reinforcements are crucial. With the potential departure of Wahi, a move for Elversberg’s Ebnoutalib or Arnaud Kalimuendo is expected soon.
VfB Stuttgart
Stuttgart’s central defense is well-stocked but subject to injuries. Acquiring another reliable defender could enhance their strength, particularly with their Europa League commitments.
TSG Hoffenheim
Hoffenheim boasts the largest squad in the league, with 33 players. However, the focus for them should be on clearing out excess numbers before adding any new players.
RB Leipzig
Leipzig has encountered central midfield challenges with the absences of Banzuzi, Ouedraogo, and Kampl. A loan for additional support might be beneficial.
Bayer 04 Leverkusen
Leverkusen’s main issue lies with their goalkeeper position; Mark Flekken, who joined last summer, has repeatedly demonstrated he cannot be depended upon.
Borussia Dortmund
Dortmund requires both quantitative and qualitative reinforcements, particularly in the midfield. They lack typical number 6 and 10 types in their lineup, which could become problematic with potential future departures.
FC Bayern Munich
Bayern’s squad is thin in certain areas, especially on the left wing, where Luis Diaz is the standout performer. Serge Gnabry has lost pace and now shines more in a central role, making it necessary to bring in a fierce competitor for Diaz.
