Simeone Issues Apology for Provoking Real Madrids Vinicius Junior
Argentine Provokes Brazilian Winger During Match
Tensions Rise on the Field
The passionate Argentine was recorded persistently goading the Brazilian attacker throughout the game. Allegedly, he remarked, “Florentino will kick you out – remember what I’m telling you,” referring to ongoing discussions regarding Vinicius’s future as his contract nears its completion.
Apology Issued
“I want to extend my apologies to Mr. Florentino and Mr. Vinícius for the incident they witnessed,” Simeone stated in a press conference on Monday, prior to his team’s Copa del Rey encounter against Deportivo La Coruna.
“It was inappropriate of me to place myself in that situation, and I acknowledge that it was wrong. The team that wins rightfully deserves to advance; they earned it.”
Despite inquiries regarding whether his actions were out of line, Simeone maintained, “I apologize, but I do not ask for forgiveness. I have no further comments to make.”
Crowd Reaction
The situation intensified during Vinicius’ substitution in the second half, as boos echoed from parts of the audience. As the struggling forward, who has gone 19 games without scoring, left the field, a chuckling Simeone gestured towards the crowd, saying, “Listen, listen!”
Real Madrid triumphed with a score of 2-1, earning a spot in the final, where they faced arch-rivals Barcelona and lost 3-2. Vinicius managed to score an impressive goal in the first half of that final.
Criticism of Behavior
Real Madrid’s manager, Xabi Alonso, commented on Simeone’s behavior, stating, “It was not an example of good sportsmanship.”
Atletico currently occupies the fourth position in the LaLiga standings, trailing leaders Barcelona by 11 points.
