Will HSV Escape the Bundesliga Relegation Fight?
A Confident Outlook
According to the renowned coach Friedhelm Funkel, Hamburger SV (HSV) is unlikely to struggle in the ongoing tight relegation battle in the Bundesliga. As the season approaches its conclusion with just six matches left, the fight for survival remains fierce, with nine teams still in contention to avoid relegation. Funkel anticipates an exhilarating finish to the season, stating, “The weeks ahead will certainly bring thrilling matches.” However, he believes some clubs, including HSV, have already secured their spots in the league.
Teams Likely to Remain in the Bundesliga
Funkel identifies HSV, along with 1. FSV Mainz 05, 1. FC Union Berlin, and FC Augsburg, as clubs that have established a comfortable point cushion. His evaluation of HSV is notably optimistic: “As a newly promoted team, they have been performing admirably. I am confident they will gather enough points to stay up.” In fact, he suggests that just one more win could be sufficient for them to guarantee their status in the top division next season.
The Importance of Stability
A crucial element contributing to HSV’s positive outlook is the sense of stability within the club. Funkel particularly commends head coach Merlin Polzin, describing his approach as “refreshingly objective, calm, and focused.” He notes that Hamburg has consistently embraced challenging decisions and maintained their composure during trying times.
Struggles for Other Northern Clubs
While HSV appears to be in a safe position, the same cannot be said for other teams in the northern region. Both Werder Bremen and FC St. Pauli find themselves in precarious situations, and Funkel believes that one of these clubs might end the season in 16th place, potentially facing relegation playoffs. Meanwhile, VfL Wolfsburg faces an even tougher predicament, currently sitting in 17th place, four points adrift of safety.
