Shay Given Expresses Outrage Over Donnarumma Signing: Trafford Has Every Right to Be Angry

Shay Given says Trafford should be furious after Donnarumma arrival: I'd be raging!

James Trafford’s Position at Manchester City Now Uncertain

James Trafford joined Manchester City this season with aspirations of stepping into Ederson’s shoes; however, the recent acquisition of Gianluigi Donnarumma has cast doubt on his future with the team.

Goalkeeper Shuffle at City

On the last day of the transfer window, City secured the Italian goalkeeper despite having signed Trafford just a month prior. With Ederson transferring to Fenerbahce, manager Pep Guardiola found himself in need of a replacement and, unexpectedly, added two new keepers before the season kicked off.

Limited Opportunities for Trafford

The 26-year-old made his debut for City during the recent Manchester derby, where the team celebrated a 3-0 victory against their rivals. While the match was a significant success for City, it does little to advance Trafford’s case for prominent playing time.

Former Keeper’s Comments

Discussing Trafford’s situation on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Monday Night Club, former City goalkeeper Shay Given expressed sympathy, noting that Trafford had opportunities to join Newcastle United this summer, who had shown strong interest.

“I truly empathize with Trafford. He was closely linked with Newcastle. Although he wears the number one jersey, the word ‘promise’ doesn’t hold weight in football, and neither does ‘guarantee’. I genuinely believe James Trafford is a fantastic goalkeeper.”

“In a World Cup year, I think Pep offered him the pitch of a lifetime. He said, ‘Come to Manchester City, the number one spot is yours, you’ll get regular playing time, experience Champions League football, and if things go well, you might even represent England in the World Cup next summer,'” Given continued.

“If I were in his position, I would be furious.”

Meanwhile, Newcastle secured goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale from Southampton after missing out on Trafford and has since achieved three clean sheets in their first four Premier League matches, with Nick Pope as their starting keeper. Trafford will be watching with disappointment as he awaits his chance to play more frequently under Guardiola.
