Pape Thiaw, manager of Senegal, has received a five-match suspension following the chaotic incidents during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final against Morocco that took place this month.

The Confederation of African Football (Caf) levied a fine of $100,000 (£72,000) on Thiaw for “unsporting behavior” and “bringing the sport into disrepute.”

During the final held on January 18 in Rabat, Senegal emerged victorious with a score of 1-0. However, the event turned tumultuous when Senegal’s players exited the field after Morocco was awarded a penalty during stoppage time.

Thiaw was reportedly furious due to a prior foul called against Morocco’s captain Achraf Hakimi just moments before Ismaila Sarr scored, leading him to direct his players to leave the match.

The game faced a delay of approximately 17 minutes until forward Sadio Mane persuaded his teammates to return to the field.

Brahim Diaz’s Panenka penalty was denied by Senegal’s goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, and immediately thereafter, referee Jean-Jacques Ndala signaled the end of the match.

Pape Gueye netted the decisive goal in the fourth extra minute, securing Senegal’s second AFCON title in five years.

Two-match suspensions were given to Senegal players Iliman Ndiaye and Sarr for “unsporting conduct towards the referee,” while the Senegal Football Federation (FSF) faced fines totaling $615,000 (£444,000).

Morocco’s Ismael Saibari was issued a three-match suspension and fined $100,000 (£72,000), while Hakimi got a two-match suspension, with one of those matches suspended for a year.

A request from Morocco’s football federation (FRMF) to overturn the match result due to the Senegal player’s walkout was rejected by Caf’s disciplinary panel.

The penalties handed to Thiaw and the players are specific to Caf competitions and will not affect their preparation for the upcoming World Cup scheduled in the US, Canada, and Mexico.

Fines for fan misconduct and towel incidents

The FSF has been fined $600,000 (£434,000) for violating Caf’s disciplinary regulations. A portion of this fine is attributed to unsporting actions by Senegal’s players and technical staff, while the remainder relates to the misconduct of the fans.

Numerous fans of the Teranga Lions engaged in confrontations with security personnel post-penalty decision, with some attempting to storm the pitch.

An additional fine of $15,000 (£11,000) was imposed as a result of five yellow cards awarded to Thiaw’s team during the final.

Conversely, the FRMF was fined $200,000 (£144,000) for the “inappropriate conduct” of ball boys at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, who were repeatedly caught attempting to seize the towel belonging to Senegal’s keeper Mendy.

Furthermore, a $100,000 fine awaits following incidents of Atlas Lions players and staff intervening in the video assistant referee area, thereby obstructing referee Ndala’s authority; the FRMF also faces a $15,000 penalty for its supporters’ use of laser pointers.

Algeria’s goalkeeper Luca Zidane (second from the left) has been suspended for two matches due to misconduct following their AFCON 2025 quarter-final elimination.

The penalties resulting from the final are in addition to Algeria’s football federation (Faf) being fined a cumulative $100,000 last week for multiple infringements of Caf rules during their quarter-final defeat to Nigeria.

Half of this total was due to “offensive and abusive behavior demonstrated by their fans” towards officials, including the display of banknotes.

Faf also faced a $25,000 fine for “unacceptable actions” from its players and staff after the match concluded, which ended in a 2-0 loss for the Fennecs.

Goalkeeper Luca Zidane has received a two-match ban for improper conduct, while right-back Rafik Belghali has been handed a four-match suspension, two of which are suspended for a year, for “aggressive and intimidating conduct towards the referee” following the match’s conclusion.

Additional fines against the Faf include $10,000 for non-adherence to security protocols, along with three separate $5,000 fines for incidents involving fans throwing objects, the use of smoke devices, and five yellow cards received during the encounter in Marrakech.
