Senegal Voices Outrage Over Imprisonment of Supporters Following Afcon Violence

Senegal Voices Concerns Over Fans’ Sentencing Following AFCON Altercations

There have been significant developments regarding the aftermath of fan unrest during the Africa Cup of Nations final in Rabat.

Arrests and Proceedings

Senegal’s Prime Minister expressed sorrow as 18 citizens received prison sentences after their involvement in disturbances during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final. These fans faced charges of hooliganism following violent incidents against security personnel and damage to property during the match held on January 18.

The turmoil in the stands erupted when Morocco was awarded a controversial penalty in the dying moments of the second half, prompting some Senegalese supporters to attempt to storm the field.

Match Context and Reactions

In a notable display of dissent, several Senegalese players left the pitch in protest against the referee’s call but later returned. The penalty kick taken by Brahim Diaz, a player for Real Madrid, was saved, and in an intense contest, Senegal managed to secure a 1-0 victory after extra time.

A Moroccan court subsequently sentenced the accused, with prison terms ranging from three months to one year and imposing fines up to 5,000 dirhams (approximately $545 or £403).

Diplomatic Strain

Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko conveyed his disappointment in parliament, stating, “It is unfortunate that the situation escalated beyond sports. Friends ought to resolve such matters amicably.”

Moroccan authorities had aimed for maximum sentences of up to two years, arguing that the fans deliberately aimed to disrupt the match’s order.

The 18 individuals have denied wrongdoing and, as confirmed by BBC Afrique, they are reportedly choosing not to appeal but plan to request a royal pardon from King Mohammed VI of Morocco.

Football Federation’s Standpoint

Senegal’s football governing body, FSF, voiced deep concern and disappointment regarding the harsh verdicts, which Bacary Cisse, the communications committee’s president, deemed “absurdly severe.”

Sonko emphasized that the management of the situation by Morocco does not reflect the spirit of solidarity between the two countries. He also mentioned that Senegal has fulfilled all necessary actions to ensure the release of its fans, hinting at the possibility of invoking a bilateral agreement for the convicts’ transfer to help bring them home.
