Senegal Celebrates AFCON Trophy Amidst Title Dispute

Senegal Celebrates Afcon Title Amid Disputed Ruling

Senegal’s Remarkable Display

Despite recent controversies surrounding their championship status, Senegal showcased the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) trophy prior to a friendly match against Peru at the Stade de France on Saturday. Earlier this month, the team was stripped of their title.

Title Controversy Explained

The Confederation of African Football (Caf) announced Morocco as the champions of the 2025 Afcon, reversing the outcome of the final that occurred in January. The match had been contentious, with Senegal’s players leaving the pitch in protest when Morocco was awarded a penalty in stoppage time while the score was tied at 0-0. After a lengthy delay of around 17 minutes, Morocco missed the penalty, allowing Senegal to secure a late victory in extra time. However, following an appeal from the Moroccan Football Association (FRMF), Caf declared that Senegal had forfeited the match, awarding Morocco a 3-0 victory instead.

Senegal is currently seeking to challenge this decision through the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which has assured a prompt ruling on their appeal.

Celebratory Moments Before the Match

In a show of resilience, Senegal’s captain Kalidou Koulibaly led his teammates onto the field carrying the Afcon trophy for a ceremonial lap. Later, Koulibaly and goalkeeper Edouard Mendy placed the trophy in the stadium’s presidential box. Senegal’s soccer kit boasted two stars, representing their claimed victories in Afcon tournaments, including the contested 2025 title and their legitimate 2021 triumph.

Match Outcome

In the friendly encounter, Senegal triumphed over Peru with a score of 2-0, finding the net through Nicolas Jackson, currently on loan at Bayern Munich, and Ismaila Sarr from Crystal Palace. This match marked Senegal’s first appearance since the contentious Afcon final and served as a preparatory step for the upcoming World Cup in June, where they will compete in a group alongside France, Norway, and either Bolivia or Iraq.
