Selke Reflects on Time with HSV and Transition to Turkey
Stellar Performance and Departure from Hamburg
The striker, having netted an impressive 22 goals, clinched the title of top scorer last season, playing a pivotal role in guiding the Red Shorts back to the top tier after a seven-year hiatus. However, both the player and the club parted ways last summer.
Fond Memories of HSV
Although his tenure at Hamburg was just one year, Selke reminisces about his time at the Elbe with great fondness. “It may sound somewhat cliché to those on the outside, considering my history with several clubs and my short stay in Hamburg, but I can say unequivocally: HSV was the highlight of my career thus far,” he shared in an interview with kicker.
Unsuccessful Contract Negotiations
After an impressive season, many anticipated that the 31-year-old would renew his contract. However, negotiations ultimately did not conclude with an agreement. Selke noted that while monetary factors were involved, they were not the primary reason for the failure to reach an agreement. “Certainly, in professional football, discussions about financial matters and contract lengths are inevitable—anything else wouldn’t be sincere. Yet, finances weren’t the decisive issue,” he explained. “I was genuinely open to finding a resolution, and I assure you that had the same willingness been present from the other side, we would have reached a consensus.”
New Chapter in Turkey
Following his departure from Germany, Selke transferred to Turkish Süper Lig club Başakşehir İstanbul. After a somewhat challenging start, he has recently found his form again, currently amassing ten goals in 22 competitive matches.
Continued Support for HSV
Selke maintains a strong emotional connection to HSV. “I watch every HSV match and support them wholeheartedly. That will never change—I will always feel close to HSV,” he affirmed, reflecting on his past contributions.
Surprised by Changes at the Club
Despite his departure, Selke expressed surprise at the substantial roster changes that took place after he left. “I believed we had established a solid foundation. While I would have suggested specific adjustments and signed a few top-quality players, I didn’t expect such a high volume of changes.” Nonetheless, he acknowledged the club’s efforts: “Ultimately, I must commend how effectively this significant overhaul has been managed.”
