Paul Scholes Critiques Manchester United’s Transfer Strategy
United’s Underwhelming Performance
Manchester United icon Paul Scholes has expressed disappointment in how the club handled their transfer activity over the summer. His comments came following United’s lackluster 3-0 defeat to Manchester City on Sunday.
Concerns Over Squad Quality
Scholes articulated his concerns during an interview with BBC Radio, stating, “I don’t believe the quality is sufficient.”
Midfield Combinations Falling Short
He emphasized the issues with the midfield, pointing out that “Whatever combination of two players out of the four or five – such as Casemiro, Bruno Fernandes, and Kobbie Mainoo – just doesn’t seem to work.”
Need for Tactical Reinforcements
Scholes highlighted the urgent need for a dynamic central midfielder who can dictate the game and sustain the team’s performance. He remarked, “I thought it was imperative to secure a midfield player with stamina who can truly control play.”
Goalkeeping Concerns
The legendary midfielder also brought attention to the goalkeeping situation, questioning the club’s judgment: “Did they really need to wait until the Grimsby match to acknowledge that Andre Onana is not up to par?”
Missed Opportunities in Recruitment
He added that if Manchester United overlooked the chance to sign Gianluigi Donnarumma when he was available, it would be a significant oversight. Scholes remarked, “The recruitment strategy seemed focused on bringing in forwards, which was necessary, but was it essential to recruit three of them? I’m not so sure.”
