Former Hearts of Oak midfielder Salifu Ibrahim has officially switched allegiance from Ghana to Benin, according to reports.
The playmaker is understood to have completed all the necessary processes to represent the Benin national team, the Squirrels.
Currently plying his trade in Kosovo with Drita FC, Salifu has been in fine form this season.
His performances reportedly convinced Benin coach Gernot Rohr to fast-track his nationality switch and consider him for the team’s next international call-up.
While the decision has surprised many in Ghana, where Salifu once illuminated the Ghana Premier League, it also reflects a broader trend in African football where players seek international recognition beyond their birth nations in pursuit of career growth.
The 25-year-old never got the chance to break into the Black Stars, but his move to Benin could offer him a fresh platform to express his talent at the international level.
If all goes according to plan, Salifu could make his Benin debut in the next round of international fixtures.
Benin have earned qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
They have been placed in Group D, where they will face a tough challenge against Senegal, DR Congo, and Botswana.
