Sadio Mané believes the global perception of African talent is shifting, and recent Ballon d’Or rankings show the continent is finally earning some respect.
Speaking on Rio Ferdinand Presents, the former Liverpool forward reflected on the growing influence of African players across Europe’s top leagues.
He pointed to the emergence of a new generation who are making a mark at giants clubs across Europe.
“I think things are changing a lot now. You can see players like us, or like this new generation: Osimhen, Nico Jackson… All playing for big teams in the biggest leagues.”
“It’s coming. I don’t know if I’m the best person to talk about it, but I believe African players can really be up there,” he added.
His comments come at a time when several African stars have made notable climbs in recent editions of the award.
Achraf Hakimi finished sixth in the 2025 Ballon d’Or, the highest-ranked African after playing a key role in PSG’s treble-winning season and maintaining exceptional form with Morocco.
A year earlier, Ademola Lookman placed 14th following his standout performances in Serie A and the Europa League.
Victor Osimhen also cracked the top 10 in 2023, placing eighth after firing Napoli to their historic league title.
“I finished in the top five three times, and that’s why I say things are changing. African players are getting more and more recognition when it comes to these kinds of awards,” he said.
