Ruben Amorim Responds to Criticism of Cristiano Ronaldo at Man Utd
Mistakes Acknowledged but Focus on Future
Manchester United’s head coach, Ruben Amorim, has openly recognized the club’s past errors but emphasized the importance of moving forward instead of fixating on previous shortcomings.
In a recent extensive interview with Piers Morgan, legendary former United player Cristiano Ronaldo praised Amorim’s efforts but remarked that he could not perform “miracles”.
Ronaldo, now with Al-Nassr and previously a teammate of Amorim, pointed out that while some players possess talent, others lack the mentality required for a top club like United.
Amorim’s Response to Ronaldo
When asked to comment on Ronaldo’s statements during a media briefing ahead of the match against Tottenham, Amorim did not specifically respond to Ronaldo. Instead, he stressed the significance of future improvements.
He [Ronaldo] understands the influence his words carry,
Amorim noted.
As a club, we acknowledge our past mistakes, and we are working to rectify them. Let’s shift our focus away from past issues.
He continued,
A lot is changing within the club — from the organizational structure to player conduct. We are seeing progress, and it’s time to put the past behind us.
Background on Ronaldo’s Departure
Ronaldo, who initially left United for Real Madrid in 2009, made a return to Old Trafford in August 2021. However, his contract was terminated in November 2022 after he publicly criticized the club and the then-manager Erik ten Hag during another interview with Morgan.
In his recent remarks, the 40-year-old expressed sadness over the club’s current situation, describing it as “one of the most significant clubs globally” that still holds a special place in his heart.
He commented,
The club lacks a proper structure. I sincerely hope to see improvements moving forward, as the club has enormous potential. Currently, they are not on the right path. It’s not just about the manager and players; Amorim is doing what he can. Miracles, however, are unattainable.
Amorim’s Tenure and Team Performance
Amorim, who took over United’s managerial role in November 2024, led the team to the Europa League final last season but fell short, missing out on both the trophy and qualification for the current Champions League.
United’s league performance has been subpar, finishing 15th last season, their worst result since being relegated in the 1973-74 season.
Despite investing over £200 million during the last summer transfer window, the season began poorly, including an embarrassing elimination from the Carabao Cup against League Two team Grimsby Town.
Though facing scrutiny, United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe supported Amorim, stating that he needs three years to demonstrate his coaching abilities. Ratcliffe has also expressed dissatisfaction with the team’s performance since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure in 2013, citing issues with player standards and compensation.
In recent weeks, United has shown signs of turning the tide, winning three of their last four league matches, which includes a notable victory against Liverpool, elevating them to eighth place in the Premier League standings.
