Ruben Amorim Discusses Tactical Shift as Manchester United Manager
Amorim: It’s Time for a Change in Manchester United’s Formation
Formation Changes Not Due to External Pressure
Head coach Ruben Amorim of Manchester United has expressed that if he were to alter the team’s formation due to outside pressure, such a decision would mark the “end” of his tenure. Recently, Amorim shifted from a three-man defense and wing-backs to a conventional four-man defense against Newcastle United, complemented by two holding midfielders.
His approach resulted in what he described as a “back six” in the closing moments of the match, which ultimately secured only their second clean sheet of the season. While he famously declared that even the Pope couldn’t influence his tactical choices, Amorim emphasized that having flexibility in formations has always been part of his strategy.
Tactical Adaptation Requires Suitable Performance
Amorim shared that he could only implement this tactical adjustment when the team demonstrated sufficient performance levels. He acknowledged that it wouldn’t reflect well if he changed tactics prematurely, as it could give the impression he was yielding to public and media scrutiny. “When I joined last season, I recognized that I may not have had the players best suited for that system, but it initiated a developmental journey,” he conveyed.
“There has been a shift now; we lack many players, and it is crucial they grasp the reasons behind the changes we are making. This is not a reaction to media or fan pressure,” he stated, adding, “When discussions about changing the system multiply, I can’t make adjustments based on those conversations, or it signals the end of a manager.”
Current Squad Challenges
With only two victories in the last eight matches leading up to the Newcastle fixture, questions linger regarding the performance level Amorim referred to. Notably, he is coping with a noticeably thin squad, with seven senior players unavailable for the home clash against the still-winless Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Concerns rise with Mason Mount’s potential absence following an injury that sidelined him at halftime in the Newcastle match. Furthermore, team captain Bruno Fernandes is expected to miss the upcoming game. The player has been pressing Amorim to reintegrate him into the lineup after suffering a hamstring injury during the defeat to Aston Villa on December 21.
“Bruno insists he needs to train,” Amorim acknowledged, “But there’s absolutely no chance he will play against Wolves. That’s definitive; you can write that down.”
Nonetheless, Amorim believes Fernandes will play a vital role even while injured. Unlike many injured players who observe matches from the stands, Fernandes was actively involved during warm-ups against Newcastle, which Amorim appreciates.
Leadership in Adversity
Describing Fernandes as a natural leader, Amorim remarked, “Even when he’s sidelined, he remains vocal. That’s why he holds the captaincy.” While admitting that Fernandes sometimes exhibits frustrating habits, he lauded his overall positive contributions.
There are currently uncertainties surrounding the return dates for Fernandes and other key players, including Kobbie Mainoo, Matthijs de Ligt, and Harry Maguire. However, it is anticipated that by the end of January, several players—Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo—will be back from their commitments at the Africa Cup of Nations.
