Robert Sanchez Expresses Disappointment as Liam Rosenior Asserts Chelsea Lacks a Clear Number One Goalkeeper
Sanchez Displeased, but Rosenior Emphasizes Competition
Chelsea’s Head Coach Addresses Goalkeeper Situation
Chelsea’s head coach, Liam Rosenior, acknowledged that goalkeeper Robert Sanchez felt “really disappointed” about being excluded from the squad for Wednesday’s match against Aston Villa. Nevertheless, Rosenior pointed out that he has yet to determine a definitive number one goalkeeper.
Sanchez faced scrutiny for his distribution and mistakes during set pieces in the recent 2-1 loss to Arsenal, prompting Rosenior to replace him with Denmark’s Filip Jorgensen, who had been his backup for some time, for the 4-1 win at Villa Park.
Rosenior’s Perspective on Player Reactions
“I’ve been upfront with Rob,” Rosenior stated. “His disappointment at not playing is expected from any player, regardless of their position.”
However, he praised Sanchez for his response in training and support for Jorgensen during warm-ups and in the locker room, describing it as “magnificent.”
Emphasizing Squad Rotation
Chelsea is pursuing a long-term strategy focused on squad rotation, and Rosenior is applying that philosophy to the goalkeeper position as well.
“I genuinely view the goalkeeper role differently for each match,” he explained. “It’s essential to have competition in all areas.”
Traditionally, a change in goalkeeper often signals the emergence of a new number one. However, Rosenior maintains that this does not apply in his approach.
“We will select the best team for each match,” he affirmed. “Filip has earned his chance through hard work and took it exceptionally well. Yet, Rob has also delivered outstanding performances.”
The Importance of Winning Matches
When questioned about the need for continuity in the goalkeeper position and whether frequent rotations could be harmful, Rosenior acknowledged the necessity for both continuity and winning.
“Yes, consistency is important, but the priority is to secure victories,” he said. “Different philosophies exist—modern versus old-school.”
He has not relied on the same starting eleven throughout his tenure.
“People might argue about the need for continuity. In retrospect, if we lose, it will be blamed on a lack of it; if we win, it’s viewed as the right call.”
Rosenior defended his decision to replace Sanchez for the Aston Villa match:
“I stand by my choice—it proved effective. I hope to continue making sound decisions.”
