UEFA’s Expansion Impacts English Football Tradition
The Premier League has reported that the expansion of European club competitions is the reason behind having only a single game on 26 December this year. Boxing Day has traditionally featured multiple fixtures in English football, but the only match this time will see Manchester United competing against Newcastle United at home, starting at 20:00 GMT.
In acknowledging this change, the Premier League stated:
We recognize the factors contributing to the reduced number of matches on this significant day, impacting a cherished custom in English football.
The league’s announcement came as part of the confirmation of the festive match schedule.
The Premier League further clarified:
Several challenges have arisen due to the expansion of European competitions, necessitating a revision to our domestic fixture calendar, including adjustments to the FA Cup schedule.
This has resulted in the Premier League being structured as a 33-weekend competition this season, which is fewer than in past years, despite maintaining a total of 380 matches since 1995. They added:
The constraints of the calendar have limited our scheduling options.
Updated December Fixture List Amid Calendar Complexities
The complete fixture list for December has been finalized, albeit 16 days later than anticipated, with the Premier League citing “complexities” surrounding the scheduling. Criticism has arisen from the Football Supporters’ Association, which lamented the last-minute announcement, calling Newcastle’s late match a “thoughtless” 8:00 PM kickoff on Boxing Day.
This year, Boxing Day falls on a Friday. It will be followed by seven matches on Saturday, December 27, wrapping up match week 18 with two more matches the following day. Last season, which marked the first since UEFA’s competition expansion, featured eight games on 26 December.
The league reiterated:
We assure everyone that next season will see an increased number of Premier League matches on Boxing Day, as that date will coincide with a Saturday.
Special arrangements are also planned to extend rest periods between games during the festive season, allowing players more recovery time; no team will play within 60 hours of a previous match.
Discussions in July among player representatives and FIFA have pushed for a minimum of 72 hours rest between matches.
How UEFA Competitions Have Changed
The layout of UEFA’s club competitions has gained complexity, now expanding to 10 midweeks instead of six, beginning from the 2024-25 season. This change results from an increased number of participating teams, transitioning to a league phase before knockout rounds, with dedicated weeks for each tournament.
Additionally, the Conference League matches have been scheduled in December, coinciding with the timing typically reserved for the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup. Crystal Palace, currently in the Conference League and progressing in the EFL Cup, is set to face Arsenal away, with the date of this fixture yet to be confirmed; it might occur on December 23, just two days after both teams play in the Premier League.
Afterwards, Arsenal will face another league match on December 27, while Crystal Palace plays the next day.
