Frauen-Bundesliga Update: Matchday Four Highlights
Bayern Maintains Strong Start While Köln Secures Important Win
Matchday four in the Frauen-Bundesliga saw only one match end in a draw, keeping the competition fierce. Both Bayern Munich and Wolfsburg are at the top of the standings with 10 points each. Meanwhile, Köln managed to move out of the last place with a crucial 2-1 victory in what many viewed as an early relegation battle.
Bayern’s Impressive Defense and Injury Setback
After a prior goalless draw against Carl Zeiss Jena, Bayern bounced back in style, defeating SC Freiburg 4-0 to reclaim the top position in the standings. Impressively, Bayern has yet to concede a single goal this season.
However, the match brought unwelcome news as Austrian midfielder Sarah Zadrazil suffered an ACL injury early on. Zadrazil, a key player since joining the team in 2020, was replaced by Lena Oberdorf, who seized the opportunity by scoring her third goal of the season. Center-back Vanessa Gilles also made her mark by netting three goals in her first four Bundesliga appearances. In addition, Germany internationals Lea Schüller and Klara Bühl scored late in the match, and Georgia Stanway contributed with three assists.
Winning Streaks for Wolfsburg and Leverkusen
Although Leverkusen stumbled out of the gate with a 2-0 loss to Bayern, they have since rallied, claiming three consecutive victories. In a recent match, RB Leipzig forward Vanessa Fudalla played a pivotal role in securing a 2-1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt, mirroring her earlier success with her previous club.
Wolfsburg also maintained their strong form with a 4-2 victory over Werder Bremen. This win put them right on Bayern’s heels, with eight different players on the scoresheet this season, including the legendary Alexandra Popp.
Road Wins for Köln, Hamburg, and Union Berlin
Köln, who had previously lost all three of their opening matches, turned their fortunes around thanks to Sandra Jessen’s two goals in a 2-1 win against Essen. Similarly, Hamburger SV secured their first victory of the season with a late goal from Lotta Wrede in Leipzig. The other recently promoted teams avoided losses as Nürnberg drew against Hoffenheim while Union Berlin climbed to sixth place after topping Jena 2-1.
Upcoming Matches Before a Short Break
There will be a brief pause in the Frauen-Bundesliga, with no matches scheduled for this weekend. The fifth matchday will kick off with Frankfurt hosting Jena on October 3rd, while Bayern and Wolfsburg will play the following day against Werder Bremen and Essen, respectively.
Following this domestic action, Bundesliga clubs will engage in their first European matches under the new Champions League format. Bayern is set to face Barcelona, while Wolfsburg will host PSG. Both teams aim to improve upon last season’s quarter-final exit.
Additionally, Frankfurt will compete against Slovácko in hopes of advancing to the Round of 16 in the inaugural UEFA Women’s Europa Park. Niko Arnautis’ team missed out on Champions League qualification due to a significant loss to Real Madrid.
