Exclusive Interview: Caparros on Arbeloa’s Coaching Journey at Real Madrid

In a special discussion with Flashscore, Caparros reflects on Arbeloa taking the helm at Real Madrid after Xabi Alonso’s exit.

Caparros’ Insight on Arbeloa’s Coaching Development

You have a deep understanding of Alvaro Arbeloa, having guided him at Deportivo La Coruna during the early stages of his career. What’s your take on his growth as a coach?

“He began as a central defender and occasionally played as a right-back. Arbeloa is relatively new to coaching, but he has steadily advanced through the youth ranks at Real Madrid. His track record speaks for itself, managing teams like Infantil A, Juvenil A, and Castilla with successful outcomes. His dedication as a player was exemplary, always giving his all during training sessions.

My time working with him was brief since he moved to Liverpool after six months, where Rafa Benitez recognized his talent. He always showed a commitment to learning and improving, which is crucial for his future in coaching. It’s a challenging yet rewarding profession.”

Arbeloa’s Valuable Lessons from Deportivo

He expressed gratitude for the knowledge gained during his time under your guidance at Deportivo, right?

“Absolutely, and it’s noteworthy that he shared the locker room with Filipe Luis, another player who transitioned from Real Madrid to Deportivo. This experience was pivotal in launching his career in the top division.”

Arbeloa’s Reputation as a Tough Player and Coach

Arbeloa was recognized for his tough playing style, and there’s talk of him being similarly tough as a coach during his time with Real Madrid’s youth teams. What are your thoughts?

“His primary strength lies in his understanding of the Real Madrid locker room dynamics, which is filled with elite players. He’s felt the pressure of this club firsthand, both as a player and a youth coach.

His experiences have prepared him for the challenges of maintaining a winning mentality. Now, he must demonstrate that he can instill that same drive as the head coach. Achieving results will be key to earning the trust and respect of the players.”

The Balance Between People and Strategy

Is the essence of coaching more focused on managing people rather than just strategies in football?

“A coach must adjust to the capabilities of his players while remaining true to his philosophy. However, what remains constant is his approach to nurturing the team. Managing the complexities of this unique environment will be essential for Arbeloa’s success.”
