Real Madrid’s Search for a Centre-Back
Real Madrid finds itself in need of a centre-back this summer, making it likely that the club will seek to add to this position for the second consecutive year. While the exact player they will target remains uncertain, a few candidates have emerged prominently.
Potential Targets
Initially, Bayern Munich’s Dayot Upamecano was viewed as the top choice for Real Madrid. However, the Bundesliga club managed to secure a renewal of his contract. Following this development, the focus seemed to shift away from Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konate, but he has now re-entered the conversation. Furthermore, Real Madrid has shown interest in Castello Lukeba, although the hefty €90 million asking price from RB Leipzig appears to be a deterrent. A more cost-effective option could be Borussia Dortmund’s Nico Schlotterbeck.
Schlotterbeck’s Contract Situation
Nico Schlotterbeck’s current contract with Dortmund runs until 2027, which could allow him to be available at a more favorable price during the summer transfer window. Although early estimates suggested that his transfer fee might fall in the range of €50-60 million, this seems somewhat unrealistic. Typically, Real Madrid opts not to spend significantly on players older than 23; however, due to the pressing need for reinforcements in their defensive lineup, the club may consider breaking this policy this season.
