Real Madrid vs Athletic Club LIVE Football Score 4 Jun 2023
Second placed Real Madrid host Athletic Bilbao in their final La Liga fixture of the season. A win over eighth placed Bilbao will guarantee they finish second in the table. Real come into this final fixture a point ahead of Atletico Madrid, who travel to Villarreal. Only one point splits the two Madrid teams. If they finish level on points, Real will finish ahead of Atletico due to their head-to-head results. Real boosted their chances of finishing second with a 2-1 win at Sevilla on Saturday. Two goals from Rodrygo gave Los Blancos the win after going behind early in the game. That was their third win in the last four league matches. Home form has seen Real win 13 out of 18 La Liga games with only one loss. That was last month when being beaten by Villarreal. Since then, Los Vikingos have won four home league games with nine goals scored.
Athletic Bilbao head to Real still hoping they can get into the Conference League next season. It’s a tight battle with them only behind seventh placed Osasuna on head-to-head results. They therefore have to get a better result than Osasuna who are home to Girona in their final game. Even then, there are other sides who could finish above them. Bilbao are not in good form with one win in seven league games. Four of the last five have been lost, the most recent being a 1-0 home loss to relegated Elche. Before that they lost a vital game 2-0 at Osasuna. Away form for Bilbao has seen them lose seven La Liga games with just one point from the last three. Back Real to win this game.
Karim Benzema‘s future has been the subject of much speculation over the last couple of days, with various reports claiming that he is heading for Saudi Arabia this summer.
As it stands, though, there has been no announcement on his future, and the Frenchman is back in the squad for this match after recovering from a foot injury.
Vinicius Junior has also recovered from a knee issue and should start, while Mariano Diaz and Marco Asensio, who are both leaving the club this summer, are included after overcoming muscular problems.
Head coach Ancelotti is expected to make a number of changes from the side that started against Sevilla, with Dani Carvajal available again following a suspension, while Eduardo Camavinga and Antonio Rudiger could also feature from the first whistle.
As for Athletic, Ander Herrera, Dani Garcia, Inigo Martinez, Jon Morcillo and Yeray Alvarez were all missing against Elche through injury, and that is again expected to be the case this weekend.
Head coach Valverde is expected to resist the temptation to shuffle his pack following the 1-0 home loss to basement side Elche, with the majority of the players set to keep their spots.
However, the team should be boosted by the return of Nico Williams, who was absent last time out through illness, with the Spaniard set to replace Gorka Guruzeta in the XI.
