Real Madrid Icon Michel: Xabi Deserved Better Treatment
Real Madrid Coach Change Sparks Debate
Many are currently questioning Xabi Alonso’s performance as Real Madrid’s manager following his replacement by Alvaro Arbeloa and the subsequent improvement in the team’s results.
Reactions on the Coaching Shift
Former player Michel shared his thoughts with Radio Marca, commenting on the timing of Alonso’s departure. “The decision to relieve Xabi of his duties was perhaps foreseeable from the start of the season. There were clear indications in the media suggesting that changes were imminent,” he stated.
He went on to pose a rhetorical question: “Do you truly believe there is a significant distinction between what Xabi does and what Arbeloa is doing?”
Michel highlighted a common trend in football, stating, “It’s often easier to shift blame onto coaches; they are typically the ones who face the axe. Xabi hadn’t recorded a substantial number of losses, either.”
Insights on Coaching Decisions
Michel, who recently parted ways with Al-Qadisiya in Saudi Arabia, emphasized the need for patience when hiring coaches. “When bringing in new managers, it’s crucial to understand that transformations cannot occur overnight; a significant adjustment period is essential,” he explained.
He recalled his own experience: “I remember a time when (Radi) Antic was dismissed while we were leading the league, only for us to later lose the title in Tenerife. Was that solely the coaches’ doing? The players and the overall squad are always the primary factors in these situations.”
