Thibaut Courtois left the Ciudad Deportiva de Valdebebas earlier today after suffering a bout of gastroenteritis. As a result, the goalkeeper is expected to miss the upcoming trip to Athens with the rest of the squad.

Real Madrid has confirmed Courtois’s absence, noting there is only a slim chance of a last-minute recovery. A club statement read:

Following evaluations by our medical staff, Courtois has been diagnosed with a viral gastrointestinal infection. His condition will continue to be monitored.

This will be the first match of the season the Belgian international has missed due to illness.

Goalkeeper Depth

With Courtois sidelined, Andriy Lunin is set to start in goal. He will be backed up by Fran González, with young talent Javi Navarro also available, as Sergio Mestre is not included in Real Madrid’s UEFA squad list.
