Real Madrid Declines Free Signing of Liverpools Konate
Ibrahima Konaté’s Contract Situation Sparks Interest
The French defender’s deal with Liverpool is set to conclude next summer, and ongoing negotiations have hit a standstill. This looming free transfer could present a significant challenge for manager Arne Slot, who is already under pressure.
Contract Expiry Approaches
At just 26 years old, Konaté will be eligible to forge a pre-contractual agreement with clubs outside of England starting on January 1st, just over a month away.
Recent reports had indicated that Real Madrid was interested in signing the defender, aiming to replicate the acquisition of Trent Alexander-Arnold from the previous season. However, according to sources, the Spanish giants have now withdrawn their pursuit of Konaté, following a lackluster start to his current season.
Real Madrid’s Change of Heart
“Real Madrid has notified Liverpool that they will not move forward with the Ibrahima Konaté deal for 2026,” reported Fabrizio Romano, highlighting a shift in their recruitment strategy.
This comes after a prolonged period where Konaté had been on their radar. The clubs had long discussions, but now Madrid has decided to abandon the deal with Liverpool. “Konaté is still contemplating a new contract with Liverpool, with a proposal currently on the table but no final decision made,” Romano added.
Other Clubs Eye Konaté
Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain have emerged as potential suitors for Konaté, although his inconsistent performances this season haven’t bolstered his chances of a transfer.
Liverpool has heavily relied on Konaté alongside Virgil Van Dijk during a tough stretch as injuries have sidelined Giovanni Leoni and Joe Gomez, compounding the team’s defensive challenges.
