Rafa Benitez Set to Lead Panathinaikos
Former Liverpool Manager Taking on New Challenge
The seasoned coach Rafa Benitez, previously at the helm of Liverpool, is anticipated to take over the management of Greek football club Panathinaikos. This marks yet another chapter in the illustrious career of the 65-year-old tactician.
A Long and Notable Career
Benitez embarked on his coaching journey in 1986 and has since been at the forefront of several prestigious European football teams. His managerial portfolio includes stints at Valencia, Napoli, Inter Milan, and Real Madrid, in addition to his notable years at Liverpool from 2004 until 2010.
Transition to Panathinaikos Following Celta Vigo Departure
After parting ways with Celta Vigo on March 12, 2024, a club where he had recorded only five victories from 28 LaLiga matches, Benitez is now poised to embrace a fresh opportunity with Panathinaikos, a contender in the Europa League, who is on the lookout for a new head coach.
Reports from the Daily Mail and the Greek publication Sport24 suggest that a groundbreaking contract is in the making, following discussions held in London with Giannis Alafouzos, the club’s president, on Sunday evening.
According to the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, the anticipated deal, valued at approximately £3.47 million, is expected to span 2½ years, positioning it as one of the most financially rewarding agreements in the club’s history. Recently, Benitez was seen alongside Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis, who has been actively involved in managerial changes.
Benitez’s Desire to Continue Coaching
In a statement made back in September, Benitez expressed his eagerness to return to coaching, emphasizing his preference to remain within Europe.
“Being labeled as a ‘legend’ can be flattering, yet it can also bring complexity,” he stated.
“It’s detrimental for a coach to be perceived as retired. People continually inquire if I wish to coach, and indeed I do—especially in England and Europe. I don’t want to be seen as finished. I’m still developing.”
