PSGs Appeal to Reschedule Ligue 1 Match Amid Champions League Commitments
PSG Seeks to Postpone Ligue 1 Encounter with Lens Amid Champions League Conflicts
Paris Saint-Germain has requested a delay in their Ligue 1 match against Lens, scheduled for April 11, due to its timing between the quarterfinal legs of the Champions League against Liverpool.
Lens Rejects PSG’s Request
The club from Lens has declined the request to reschedule the match, arguing that doing so would diminish the importance of the French league to accommodate the European aspirations of specific clubs.
Anticipated League Decision
A ruling from the French league is expected soon, with past instances showing that the league has supported its clubs participating in European tournaments.
Title Race Dynamics
Currently, Ligue 1 showcases a tightly contested title race, with Lens trailing PSG by just one point, although Lens has played one additional match.
The upcoming match poses a challenge for PSG, the reigning Champions League titleholders, as they prepare for two crucial games against Liverpool—hosting them three days prior and traveling to Anfield three days later.
PSG’s Previous Rescheduling Experience
Earlier, the league adjusted the schedule for a PSG match against Nantes, which occurred between their round-of-16 matchups with Chelsea. PSG ultimately dominated Chelsea, winning 8-2 on aggregate thanks to the added rest. In contrast, Lens is unwilling to negotiate a similar arrangement.
Lens’ Concerns and Statements
Lens expressed their concerns in a statement, indicating that there is a growing perception that the French league is being regarded as secondary, overshadowed by the interests of certain clubs in Europe.
They emphasized, “This perception of sporting fairness is troubling and lacks parallels in major European leagues.”
Despite being significantly smaller in budget compared to PSG, Lens is wary of the impact a rescheduling could have on their already intense schedule as they are also set to compete in the French Cup semifinals on April 21.
Risks of Rescheduling
The club noted, “Postponing this match today would leave Lens without competitive play for 15 days, followed by an unmanageable schedule of matches every three days, a situation unsustainable for a club of our size and resources.”
Historical Context of the Teams
Lens, with their sole French title won in 1998, are up against PSG, who holds a record 13 championships and secured last season’s title with relative ease, suffering only two losses throughout that campaign.
Lens concluded their statement by highlighting a broader issue regarding the respect owed to league competition: “It is reasonable to question the league’s commitment to its own competition when it seems to be placed on the back burner in favor of other ambitions.”
Additional Considerations
Another complication may arise, as Strasbourg has reportedly requested a rearrangement of their league match against Brest on April 12, due to it coinciding with their Conference League quarterfinal match against German club Mainz.
