Prosper Harrison Addo, Esq., the General Secretary of the Football Association, has been named a member of the FIFA Legal Committee, marking a notable acknowledgment of his legal skills and contribution to the governance of football.
This appointment follows the stipulations outlined in the FIFA Statutes and FIFA Governance Regulations, with Mr. Addo set to serve a four-year term from 2025 to 2029.
Role of the FIFA Legal Committee
The FIFA Legal Committee is a vital Standing Committee that offers advice and support to the FIFA Council on various legal issues, such as the interpretation of statutes, regulatory matters, and governance challenges in international football. The committee is headed by Elvis Chetty from Seychelles, with Gibraltar’s Michael Llamas serving as the Deputy Chair.
Mr. Addo’s Background
Mr. Addo played a significant role in the development of the FIFA General Secretaries Handbook and is esteemed among his fellow General Secretaries. He also contributed to the creation of the FIFA Clearing House Regulations.
With a wealth of legal and administrative experience, Mr. Addo has been the General Secretary of the GFA since 2020. Before this, he was the Senior Manager of Compliance at Scancom PLC (MTN Ghana) and previously held the role of Manager for Commercial Legal.
Qualifications and Experience
Possessing more than 24 years of legal experience, Mr. Addo is a member of the Ghana Bar Association. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Law and Economics from the University of Ghana, Legon, and holds an MBA from the University of Salford’s Salford Business School in Manchester, UK. He also possesses numerous certifications in law, governance, and administration.
Contributions to Ghanaian Football
Mr. Addo has held several key positions in Ghanaian football, including Chairman of the GFA Disciplinary Committee for the Greater Accra Regional FA, member of the national Disciplinary Committee, and member of the FA Cup Committee, among other roles. His extensive experience in football governance and legal affairs has earned him significant respect in the football community.
He continues to be an active member of both the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) and the Institute of Public Relations (IPR) in Ghana, where he is recognized as an associate member.
