Premier League: How the International Break Can Benefit Your Team

Is the Three-Week Premier League Break Beneficial for Your Team?

A Pause as International Action Takes Center Stage

The Premier League is currently experiencing a nearly three-week hiatus as national teams engage in international matches. For certain clubs, this break is timely, providing a chance to regroup and recalibrate. Conversely, others may find this interruption halts the momentum they’ve built through recent performances.

With the FA Cup quarter-finals scheduled for two weeks from now, the next Premier League matches will not commence until April 10th. This article examines the implications of this break for teams vying for the title, those aiming for European competition next season, and clubs fighting to avoid relegation. As numerous players withdraw from international duty, will this pause be a welcome respite or a hindrance to ongoing success?

A Tense Interval for Arsenal – Title Aspirations

Leading the Premier League, Arsenal is in a strong position, sitting nine points ahead of second-placed Manchester City, although they have played one more game than their rivals. However, with their next league encounter not until April 11 against Bournemouth, they’ll have to contend with the aftermath of their League Cup final defeat to City for a prolonged period.

While they will participate in matches against Southampton in the FA Cup on April 4 and face Sporting in the Champions League on April 7, even a two-week wait can feel extensive to ruminate on a loss.

Tim Krul, a former Newcastle goalkeeper, shared his insights on BBC Radio 5 Live: “They had an unbeaten streak of 14 matches, so how they respond to this setback is crucial. The anxiety is palpable because they have been in contention for the Premier League title in previous seasons. Maintaining composure in the coming weeks will be pivotal.”

He acknowledged the upcoming clash with City in April as a significant moment for determining the title.

For the City squad, this break presents a different dilemma. They may feel a strong desire to keep their winning momentum alive after the League Cup triumph. Nico O’Reilly, who scored both goals in that final, expressed the need to build on the victory, stating, “We have to carry this momentum forward after the international break.”

Opportunity to Recharge? The Champions League Race

The secondary battle focuses on the fight for Champions League qualification, where Liverpool and Chelsea are grappling to reclaim their top-four ambitions. Having suffered two losses and one draw in their last three matches, Chelsea’s title defense has faltered, resulting in a lack of confidence.

Liverpool, following a defeat to Brighton, finds themselves in fifth place, trailing fourth-placed Aston Villa by five points. Chelsea sits one point further back and is struggling with four consecutive losses across competitions. Manager Liam Rosenior views the international break as a chance for a mental reset and hopes for improvement through this time off.

He mentioned after the defeat to Everton, “This break comes at an ideal moment for us. While many players will represent their countries abroad, perhaps some time apart will help to refresh the team.”

Fortunately for both clubs, fifth place may be sufficient to secure Champions League participation in the upcoming season.

Pursuing Other European Football

Achieving a top-seven finish may grant access to additional European football next term. Currently, Brentford and Everton are in a favorable position, sitting seventh and eighth respectively and positioning themselves for potential European competition.

Brentford has exceeded expectations this season, entering the break with only one defeat in their last six matches. However, they’ve also secured just one win, making this break timely to rejuvenate.

Everton’s recent 3-0 victory against Chelsea boosts their confidence, but they face the challenge of maintaining this positive momentum during the pause. Meanwhile, tenth-placed Brighton’s success over Liverpool strengthens their optimism as they advance in the season.

Sunderland’s recent victory over Newcastle is not only celebratory for fans but also positions them better in the race for Europe, while Newcastle fans are left to ponder after a tough stretch, including a significant defeat by Barcelona.

Bournemouth, still in contention for a top-seven finish, remains a threat with an 11-match unbeaten streak despite being four points shy of seventh place.

The Relegation Contest

The relegation battle is shaping up to be an intriguing aspect of the remainder of the season. Tottenham has faced a challenging campaign and narrowly escaped dropping to the bottom after a damaging 3-0 loss to Nottingham Forest, a direct competitor in the relegation fight.

Tottenham is the only Premier League team without a league win in 2023, putting them in a precarious position, having not won for an extended period in league history. This break may provide a crucial opportunity for strategic planning to ensure survival.

Commenting on the situation, former Liverpool and Tottenham midfielder Danny Murphy observed the potential adverse effects of recent performances, noting the alarming number of goals conceded at home.

In contrast, Nottingham Forest will be buoyed by their recent victory that placed them three points clear of the relegation zone. However, West Ham’s loss to Aston Villa halted their momentum at a crucial moment, with manager Nuno Espirito Santo expressing frustration at entering the international break following a setback.

Reflecting on the demands ahead, he stated, “It’s essential to recognize our need for improvement. We have serious work to do and must respond better to maintain our status.”
