Power Dynamos are within touching distance of history as they bid to become only the third Zambian club to ever reach the CAF Champions League group stage.
The reigning Zambian champions booked their place in the second preliminary round after edging out Ivorian giants ASEC Mimosas 7-6 on penalties in Abidjan, following a tense 1-1 draw across the two legs.
ASEC looked to have taken control when Souleymane Fofana struck in the 53rd minute, but Seydou Sacko’s red card just 11 minutes later undid their momentum.
With the tie deadlocked, the Zambians held their nerve in the shootout.
Shumah, Chansa, Kondwani, Bamidele, and Mphasi converted flawlessly, while Romaric Amoussou’s miss proved costly for the Ivorians.
The victory means Power Dynamos join Zanaco and ZESCO United as the only Zambian sides to have come this far in the competition, with a chance to go even further.
Up next for the Ndola-based outfit is Uganda’s Vipers SC, who progressed after a 2-0 aggregate win over Namibian side African Stars.
Victory would send Power Dynamos into the Champions League group stage, a feat Zambian football has been waiting to see replicated for years.
