Pep Guardiola Expects Rodri to Remain at Man City, But Unhappy Players Are Free to Depart
Guardiola expresses desire for Rodri to remain amid player discontent
Potential exits for unhappy players
Manchester City’s head coach Pep Guardiola has conveyed his hope that midfielder Rodri will continue with the club, while also stating that players who are dissatisfied can seek opportunities elsewhere.
Rodri’s remarks on Real Madrid
During the recent international break, former Atletico Madrid star Rodri hinted at the possibility of joining their city rivals, Real Madrid, remarking that “one cannot refuse a chance from the best clubs globally.”
The 29-year-old Spanish international has accumulated 293 appearances since his transfer to City in 2019, with his current contract set to expire next summer. Guardiola acknowledged the allure of playing for Real Madrid, stating, “No player would turn down the opportunity to join [Real Madrid].”
Guardiola’s stance on player happiness
Guardiola articulated his desire for Rodri to remain a part of the team for as long as possible, recognizing his immense talent. However, he emphasized that the personal choices of players must be respected: “Each individual has their own life to live.”
Rodri’s contributions and future
Rodri was named the Ballon d’Or winner in 2024 but faced significant challenges last season due to a knee injury, resulting in City missing out on major trophies for the first time in eight years. This season, he has battled hamstring issues yet managed to participate in 28 matches, contributing to City’s Carabao Cup victory against Arsenal at Wembley.
In his time with Manchester City, Rodri has claimed four Premier League titles, along with Champions League, FA Cup, and three League Cup championships.
Speaking to Spanish media previously, Rodri acknowledged the transition many players have made from Atletico to Real Madrid, stating, “One cannot refuse a chance from the top clubs.”
Guardiola highlighted Rodri’s deep connection with Manchester City, noting his substantial contributions. He asserted that he would not obstruct Rodri if he chooses to leave and insists that the club’s welfare takes precedence over individual players: “If a player is unhappy, they should depart. The club will continue, regardless of individual sentiments.” He also mentioned that he’s been told by the club about their intentions for Rodri to stay, expressing optimism, albeit with uncertainty about the future.
