Paul Scholes Clarifies No Offense Meant Towards Michael Carrick at Manchester United

Scholes Clarifies Instagram Post Regarding Carrick

Scholes’ Intentions Explained

Paul Scholes has asserted that his recent Instagram story mentioning Michael Carrick, the interim head coach of Manchester United, was “not meant to be offensive” towards his ex-colleague.

After Manchester United’s 2-1 loss to Newcastle United last Wednesday, marking Carrick’s first defeat, Scholes remarked, “Michael has definitely got something special about him…because Utd have been [expletive] last four games.”

Former team-mate Patrice Evra criticized Scholes’ comments, speculating that he hoped Scholes’ account had been compromised.

Addressing the Comments

In a discussion on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast, accompanied by former Manchester United players Wes Brown and Nicky Butt, Scholes clarified his remarks. He emphasized that he had since communicated with Carrick about the matter.

“It was in no way intended to be offensive towards Michael,” Scholes stated. “Michael is one of the kindest individuals you’ll meet in football, and he’s the last person I would aim to upset.”

Scholes further noted, “I sent Michael a message right away, saying, ‘Look, I never meant to offend you.’ Fortunately, he assured me he wasn’t upset by it.”

Manchester United’s Current Position

Carrick took over the managerial role after Ruben Amorim’s dismissal and initially went unbeaten in seven matches. However, recent performances have not mirrored the impressive wins against teams like Manchester City, Arsenal, and Fulham at the onset of his tenure. Currently, Manchester United sits third in the league, positioning them well for Champions League qualification.

“I think people have interpreted it differently from what I intended,” Scholes remarked. “My point was simply that I believed their last four games haven’t been up to standard, yet he continues to deliver results.”

He added, “Our greatest manager once said that luck plays a part. With send-offs and unforeseen events during matches, luck can influence outcomes—this was my only comment.”

Reactions from Colleagues

Brown commented, “I can see it from both perspectives. Once Scholes explained it, it completely made sense. However, my initial impression was that he was criticizing him.”

In response, Scholes clarified, “What Wes pointed out—something I hadn’t considered—was the interpretation that I was labeling him a lucky manager. I wasn’t implying that; rather, I was acknowledging his talent in achieving results with a team I felt hadn’t performed well over the last four games.”

Earlier this year, United defender Lisandro Martinez also responded critically to remarks made by Butt and Scholes surrounding team performance.
