Striker’s Return from Knee Injury
Ongoing Absence
The forward has not participated in any matches since January due to a persistent knee issue. He was last seen on the pitch during a 3-1 loss to Chelsea on January 25, which has led to him missing seven games as the decision was made not to pursue surgical options.
Upcoming Return
However, he is set to be in the frame for Crystal Palace’s first-leg match against AEK Larnaca in the Conference League Round of 16, with a plan to commence partial first-team training next week.
Coach Glasner commented, “We aim for him to start integrating into team training partially next Monday ahead of the Larnaca match. Initially, he will likely be on the bench.”
He added, “After a lengthy absence, his knee is showing improvement. Therefore, we’ve decided to begin his reintegration. We must proceed with caution, but our objective is to have him ready for both the Larnaca and Leeds fixtures.”
Competition for Places: Jean-Philippe Mateta
Upon his return, Mateta will need to vie for his position. The club secured striker Jorgen Strand Larsen from Wolves shortly before the January transfer window closed, with Mateta’s potential transfer to Milan appearing imminent then. Larsen has made a positive impression in his six games for the club.
“Jefferson Lerma has returned to the squad but isn’t quite ready to start,” the coach noted. “He has trained with us and is in good condition. Although it may be early, we can utilize him for 15-20 minutes if necessary.”
“In such a case, either Chadi [Riad] or Nathaniel Clyne will take the defensive role. Those are our options, and one will certainly start.”
Injury Updates
Eddie Nketiah, on the other hand, will be sidelined for a few additional weeks due to a thigh injury. Glasner concluded, “Eddie Nketiah won’t be back until at least April. We are working diligently to have him rejoin the team as soon as possible.”
