Nuno Espirito Santo of West Ham Urges Clear Definition of Foul Criteria

Nuno Demands Clearer Guidelines on Foul Play at Set-Pieces

Concerns Raised by West Ham’s Manager

West Ham United’s coach, Nuno Espirito Santo, has expressed the need for more definitive guidelines regarding fouls during set-pieces, noting that the current levels of physicality are “nearly outrageous.”

The Hammers’ manager is the latest in a series of Premier League figures to speak out on the topic. He urged that referees should engage with clubs to clarify what constitutes a foul versus acceptable contact, as the ongoing ambiguity leads to “abnormal” situations on the field.

Before the upcoming FA Cup clash with Brentford, Nuno shared his apprehensions with Howard Webb, the head of the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL).

The Need for Review

Nuno characterized the allowances made by referees during set-piece scenarios as “almost crazy,” insisting that many incidents involve unacceptable contact, such as holding and blocking players.

  • “I believe many of these situations are fouls,” he remarked.
  • “While some level of contact is permissible, it’s clear that current standards extend well beyond what should be allowed in football.”

His sentiments resonate within the league, as Liverpool’s head coach, Arne Slot, previously noted that the increasing focus on set-pieces has diminished the enjoyment of Premier League matches. Arsenal, currently leading in the league, has particularly come under scrutiny for their tactics during corner situations.

Echoing Opinions from Other Managers

David Moyes, manager of Everton, referred to Arsenal as pioneers in utilizing “dark arts” during matches. Likewise, Brighton’s head coach Fabian Hurzeler criticized Arsenal’s tactics, stating there seems to be no coherent rules governing how teams block opponents in these situations.

Hurzeler pointed out the inconsistency in officiating, explaining that sometimes a foul is called, while at other times it is ignored entirely. This inconsistency adds to Nuno’s concerns, as he believes the increased contact allowed against goalkeepers complicates their duties, making it harder for them to perform effectively.

Nuno concluded, “I’ve shared my concerns with Howard Webb, who is perceptive enough to recognize the issue. It’s not just my opinion; this sentiment spans the entire league.”
