Nottingham Forest Advances to Europa League Quarterfinals
Midtjylland Struggles in Penalty Shootout
Nottingham Forest has secured its place in the Europa League quarterfinals after a dramatic victory over Midtjylland, who failed to convert any of their penalties during the shootout.
Forest entered the second leg trailing 1-0 but achieved a 2-1 win in Denmark, leading to a 3-0 success in the penalty shootout on Thursday.
Despite a challenging season with few goals, Forest showcased their quality at key moments, setting up a quarterfinal matchup against either Stuttgart or FC Porto.
Tactics and Performance
Forest’s lineup saw significant changes as they aimed to overturn their first-leg deficit, indicating a focus on both European success and Premier League survival. Coach Vitor Pereira’s decisions appeared to prioritize avoiding relegation over pursuing further success in Europe.
The team dominated possession throughout the match but struggled to find the back of the net. They came close when Ryan Yates hit the crossbar, while Philip Billing cleared a dangerous ball off the line.
Their persistence paid off just before halftime, with a header from Nicolas Dominguez giving them the lead. Yates extended the lead with a powerful shot, but a response from Martin Erlic forced extra time.
During the extra period, Lorenzo Lucca and Yates had goals disallowed for offside, while Midtjylland faltered completely in the shootout by missing all three attempts, allowing Forest to capitalize on their chances.
Looking Ahead to the Premier League
With an eye on their crucial Premier League match against Tottenham on Sunday, Pereira made nine changes from the squad that drew against Fulham the previous week.
Forest started sharply, forcing Midtjylland’s defense into errors. James McAtee’s pinpoint pass set up Yates, who struck the woodwork, while Lucca’s attempt was saved by the opposition keeper.
After a series of missed opportunities, Forest finally broke through before halftime. Dilane Bakwa’s cross found Nikola Milenkovic, who assisted Dominguez for a looped header over the goalkeeper to make it 1-0.
In the 52nd minute, Yates increased the aggregate score with a powerful shot from distance. Midtjylland, however, equalized unexpectedly in the 69th minute through Erlic, keeping the match competitive.
Despite missing chances in the final moments, with Yates’ header also ruled out for offside, the teams headed into penalties. The shootout saw both Cho and Aral Simsir for Midtjylland hit the post, while Forest’s Gibbs-White, Ibrahim Sangaré, and Neco Williams scored, ensuring Nottingham Forest’s passage to the next round.
