Kovač Faces Selection Dilemma at Dortmund
After experiencing a series of injuries at the beginning of the 2025/26 season, Niko Kovač now finds himself in a fortunate position where multiple players are vying for roles within Borussia Dortmund’s lineup. A key area of competition is the right-wing back position, currently contended by Julian Ryerson and Yan Couto.
Ryerson’s Performance
Julian Ryerson has appeared in six consecutive Bundesliga matches this season but has been a starter in only three of them, contributing three assists. Kovač chose the 28-year-old for the highly anticipated Der Klassiker clash against Bayern Munich but remained noncommittal about the lineup for the upcoming match against 1. FC Köln.
“I won’t disclose who will be on the pitch tomorrow,” Kovač stated. “I appreciate having two distinct styles to choose from.”
Attributes of the Contenders
Kovač elaborated on the differing strengths of both players, saying, “Julian Ryerson is certainly capable of holding his own physically. On the other hand, Yan Couto showcases more technical skills. Each player brings unique qualities that enhance our team. Julian has a significant role with the Norwegian national team, and naturally, he wants to feature in every match. Unfortunately, that’s not always feasible.”
Couto’s Status
In contrast, Yan Couto was not utilized last weekend but has started in more Bundesliga matches (five) than Ryerson this season. Currently absent from Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil squad, Couto stands a good chance of starting while Ryerson has recently played for the Norwegian team during the international break.
