Nigerian Team Refuses to Train Ahead of World Cup Qualifiers
Nigeria faces a risk of missing consecutive World Cups.
Nigeria’s national football team, along with their coaching staff, abstained from training on Tuesday, just 48 hours before an important World Cup qualifier against Gabon in Morocco.
This protest stems from ongoing issues regarding unpaid match bonuses and allowances, with some payments reportedly dating back to 2019.
Key players, including Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, are urging for a resolution to the matter with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
This boycott has put a damper on preparations for their African playoff semi-final scheduled to take place at the Moulay Hassan Stadium in Rabat on Thursday at 16:00 GMT.
In a statement on X, Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong remarked, “Once resolution is found, we will be the first to confirm it.” He also emphasized, “Our priority is to remain focused on the significant matches ahead.”
While the NFF has not officially commented on the situation, reports suggest that urgent deliberations are currently in progress.
The Super Eagles are expected to return to training on Wednesday, contingent on resolving the financial disputes which allegedly include compensations for the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and the ongoing World Cup qualifying series.
The NFF has a track record of delayed payments, and this recent development has garnered substantial reactions from the public, with many urging the federation to swiftly address the problems.
To keep their aspirations for the World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the United States alive, Nigeria must secure a victory against Gabon.
The winners will proceed to face either Cameroon or DR Congo in the African playoff final this Sunday, determining which team advances to an intercontinental qualifying matchup set for next March.
This six-team tournament will yield two spots for the final tournament.
