Raskin Addresses Misrepresentation During Martin’s Tenure at Rangers
Midfielder’s Reflection on Recent Challenges
Rangers’ midfielder Nicolas Raskin has expressed feeling mischaracterized during the earlier part of the season while under the management of Russell Martin. The Belgian player faced significant scrutiny after being omitted from key matches as Rangers endured a challenging spell.
Raskin acknowledged that doubts about his future began creeping in due to this lack of playing time. However, he is now open to the idea of renewing his contract, which has 18 months remaining.
“There has been a narrative created around my situation that doesn’t reflect the reality of what was occurring internally,” stated the 24-year-old, as he looked forward to the Europa League match against Sporting Braga this Thursday.
Overcoming Difficulties
Raskin admitted that this period was particularly tough for him, both physically and mentally. He remarked, “I can’t deny it was a struggle. I’m still trying to regain my peak form, and I haven’t enjoyed every moment of it.”
He pointed out that he chose to maintain a low profile during this challenging time, focusing on improving his game in hopes of making a positive impact on the team.
Martin made the controversial decision to exclude Raskin from the squad for an Old Firm derby against Celtic, citing feedback from senior teammates and raising concerns that Raskin might be distracted by transfer speculation.
“It was a tough point where I had indications that my future was uncertain, but that’s in the past now,” he said, referring to his transfer from Standard Liege to Rangers in 2023.
Moving Forward with Rangers
Raskin remains committed to helping the team and aims to contribute as much as possible. “My focus is on doing my job and helping the club succeed. We are in the process of building something new,” he stated.
With his current contract extending until the summer of 2027, Raskin made it clear that if he were to exit the club, he hopes that it would be beneficial for Rangers.
“I’m very content here. We’re working with a new manager to create something special. I’m awaiting the right discussions and giving my best for the club,” he shared.
Raskin further emphasized his desire to depart positively if such a situation arises, stressing, “I don’t want to leave for free or in a negative manner. The club has greatly supported me, contributing to my national team career, and I want to give back as much as I can.”
