Newcastle Lacking an “X-Factor” – Howe on Goal Scoring Issues
Struggles in Scoring
Newcastle United has faced difficulties in the scoring department, netting only three goals across their first five matches in the Premier League. This puts them in a challenging position, with only Aston Villa recording fewer goals in the league.
Manager’s Comments on Squad Adjustments
Eddie Howe, the team’s manager, expressed that the club is in a state of “evolution” following the departure of star forward Alexander Isak, who made a record-breaking move to Liverpool on transfer deadline day. The team recently acquired Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa, but their late arrivals have added pressure as the season has commenced.
Howe remarked, “This has been the most significant overhaul of the squad during my tenure.”
Need for Seamless Integration
In Howe’s view, a seamless six-week pre-season is ideal to solidify team dynamics and relationships. “Unfortunately, it’s not the scenario we find ourselves in now, and we must build these connections on the go,” he stated, expressing confidence in managing this integration.
Current Injuries Impacting the Team
Injuries are playing a role in the team’s struggles. Wissa, who joined from Brentford for £55 million, is sidelined with a knee injury suffered during international duty with the DR Congo. In contrast, Woltemade, purchased for £69 million, made a positive impact by scoring on his debut against Wolves but still requires time to adapt to the physical demands of the Premier League.
Howe emphasized that comparing Woltemade to Isak may not be advantageous, stating, “No comparison to Alex will be beneficial for any player.” He remains optimistic about the team’s potential and the learning process ahead.
“While the foundation appears strong and our players have a history of scoring, we are currently missing that crucial X-factor,” Howe added.
Transfer Saga and Squad Composition Challenges
The transfer saga involving Isak was marked by tension, as he sought a move to Liverpool, which continued until the final moments of the transfer window. Howe had hoped for early additions to the squad but faced setbacks when targets like Joao Pedro, Hugo Ekitike, and Benjamin Sesko opted for other clubs.
Looking ahead to the upcoming Carabao Cup fixture against Bradford City, Howe clarified that it was never part of the plan to start the season with new players needing significant adjustments mid-competition. The manager acknowledged the challenging summer and noted, “We’ve aimed to emerge from it in strong shape, and I believe we have.”
